Protect Patient Safety in Cutting-Edge Diagnostic Imaging Services

Patients in Connecticut should access to the latest, best and safest technology when it comes to diagnostic imaging procedures such as a Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) or Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

Did you know?

These advanced tests might include a procedure called “Fluoroscopy” which uses pulses of an x- ray beam to take real-time footage of tissues inside your body. It is a key procedure for diagnosing and monitoring certain conditions.
These cutting-edge technologies allow for the early detection and treatment of cancers and other diseases. Lives are saved. Policymakers should encourage the use of these technologies and Fluoroscopy with patient safety as the uppermost concern.

Pending Legislation is a Concern

Legislation is pending in the 2024 session of the Connecticut General Assembly that could make the goal of patient safety more difficult.

One bill would permit certain medical staff to perform Fluoroscopy without the supervision of a medical doctor. The procedure uses ionizing radiation and must be properly dosed. 1 Ideally, legislators will retain the current supervision requirement by removing section 10 from the bill or, at a minimum, revise it to include the supervision requirement for the new staff who would be authorized to perform the procedure.

Appropriate Supervision Enhances Patient Safety

The bottom-line is patient safety is enhanced with appropriate supervision of medical staff who perform Fluoroscopy.
